Today is Earth Day, and this Girl on a Budget has decided to live a greener life. Last year, I tried gardening as a way to save the environment and increase my activity. This year I’m taking a different avenue toward being green. Living green doesn’t have to break your bank account. The local dollar store has a variety of earth-friendly options. In a recent trip I found the following items.
Top 3 Items for Green Living
- Reusuable shopping bags. These bags are often located near the check-out area and can be used for grocery shopping as well as purchasing small items from the dollar store. Use these bags instead of getting new plastic or paper bags each time.
- Containers for recyclable goods. Dollar stores have a variety of containers that can serve as storage options for goods you want to recycle. You can set up a container for aluminum cans, plastic items, paper, and glass.
- Items for planting. The dollar store often has many of the items needed for planting flowers or vegetables. These items include potting soil, seeds, gloves and pots. Planting helps save the earth.

In addition, you can purchase eco-friendly products that reduce the harm to the environment. Using these products is a way to live a greener lifestyle. For example, white vinegar can be used as a cleaning product. It cuts grease and freshens. Other eco-friendly non-toxic cleaning products from the dollar store include baking soda. It cleans and deodorizes.
The earth is a valuable resource. Living a greener lifestyle will help to save the environment and the planet. The tips listed above provide ways to get started with a green lifestyle by using items from the dollar store.
