Mission: Gardening on a Budget
With the weather finally warm enough to enjoy time outside, this girl on a budget is starting a mission to live a greener life and be more active. First on my list of environmentally-friendly living is starting a garden. Yes, I said GARDEN, a planned space set aside for the display, cultivation and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature (per Wikipedia.com).

Gardening can have many benefits, ranging from relaxation to inexpensive food dishes while reducing your personal carbon footprint. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get started, but you do need some basic items. When digging into this project, I came up across a few helpful supplies at my local dollar store:
- Garden Shears – also known as Clippers are used to prune, shape and remove foliage or branches. You should pick a pair of shears that fits comfortably in your hand. Omitting this requirement may make gardening a painful experience.
- Gloves – Every gardener needs a pair of garden gloves. Gardening can be tough on your hands. Gloves protect them with the right pair of gloves.
- Potting Soil – a mixture used to grow plants, herbs and vegetables in a contained garden environment.Container gardens are found in terracotta or plastic pots and window boxes and are useful in areas where the soil or climate is less than optimal for plant or crop growth.
- Seed Packets – there were a variety of seed packets available, including tomato, beet lettuce, cabbage, radish, watermelon, squash as well as flowers (gardenia, sunflower, zinnias).
- Spray Nozzle – a necessary gardening tool is the spray nozzle that can be excellent for watering seedlings (young developing plants).
Gardening can be a fun hobby; but it requires planning, time and effort for best results. It is important to do your research and decide on the ideal location and items to grow. Your local dollar store is the perfect place to find necessary garden tools at a great price.
